Bill to Abolish County Jury Commissioner Clears House, Says Delozier

Legislation that would permit counties and voters to eliminate the Office of Jury Commissioner today cleared the state House, said Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland), who is a co-sponsor of the measure.

“The Cumberland County commissioners have asked for this legislation to eliminate these costly and unnecessary county government positions,” Delozier said.  “The advancement of technology has allowed several counties to create jury selection lists, which eliminates the need for an elected official to manually carry out these duties.”

House Bill 2000, which was supported by the full House by a vote of 130 to 59, would amend the County Code by permitting county officials to ask the electorate to abolish the positions of jury commissioner.  If voters approve the referendum at the ballot box, the office would expire at the end of the current jury commissioners’ term.

“With the current state of the economy, county governments, with support of the residents, must take the actions necessary to reduce their operating costs,” Delozier said.  “In addition, we need to ensure that citizens have a say in the composition of their government.”

Delozier noted that elimination of this position could result in significant cost savings without impeding the judicial process.

“If counties and voters decide to eliminate these positions, there will be no change in the services carried out for the courts,” Delozier said.  “This bill is about efficiency and saving taxpayer dollars.”

The bill now heads to the Senate for its consideration.
