Personal Income Tax Hike off the Table, Announced Delozier
State workers’ fate still hangs in the balance
Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland) released the following statement in response to tonight’s announcement that the governor’s Personal Income Tax (PIT) hike has been taken off the budget negotiating table:
“Tonight’s announcement marks a huge victory for our citizens who are struggling daily to put food on the table and pay their bills. The governor’s claims that $5 a week in an increased Personal Income Tax will not harm our residents are untrue. He should talk to many of our local residents who live paycheck to paycheck and cannot afford another tax increase.
“While tonight’s announcement is good news for Pennsylvanians, it does not spell an end to the waiting game that our state workers have been forced to play because a state budget has not yet been passed. If it was up to me, we would stay here and work all weekend to try to finalize a budget agreement; however, that same sentiment is not shared by our House Democrat colleagues who control the schedule.
“To enact a balanced state budget bill, the House Republicans are poised to unveil an amendment at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 10, at a press conference to be held at the state Capitol. Our plan does not increase taxes, provides funding for necessary government services and lives within the state’s spending means.
“Families across this Commonwealth have been forced to set and stay within their budgets. While the choices they make may be difficult, they are needed to keep the family ship afloat. Our amendment will do just that for state government.
“I am hopeful that the House Democrats will realize that we cannot continue to hold state workers hostage and a budget bill will be brought up for consideration and debate early next week.”
