Delozier Issues Statement on Paying State Workers as Budget Deadlock Continues
Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland) today issued the following statement in response to the governor’s announcement that he is considering measures to pay state workers while budget negotiations continue.
“Pennsylvania is in its fifth week without a state budget, talks are stalled and the governor has just now decided to explore options to pay our state workers. The governor knew where the budget impasse was going and the direct effect on our state employees and their families. He has put us here and House Democrat leaders will not allow the bills to advance that are needed to pay our state employees.
“At today’s press conference, the governor said that he was considering ways to pay the state employees but the House and Senate have both introduced several pieces of legislation over the past weeks that would have ensured state workers were paid on time and in full for the work they performed. These measures include stopgap legislation and my House Bill 1870 to appropriate employees’ salaries only. Instead, thousands of state workers have been forced to take out loans, ration their savings or seek assistance to feed their families.
“Many of our state workers live paycheck-to-paycheck and know exactly how much they get paid a month unlike the governor. It is unfair to put this strain on state employees when they are not the ones responsible for the current budget situation.
“With the governor finally on board, I am hopeful that state workers will no longer be held hostage and we can get the employees paid.”
