Helping Foster Children Succeed as Adults
As a way to help children placed in the foster care system succeed as adults, the House Education Committee held an informational meeting this week to review House Bill 1745, legislation that would allow these individuals to access better educational and job-training opportunities.
More than 22,000 youth are in foster care, and each year more than 1,000 of these children “age out” of the system. Sadly, only 50 percent of foster youth graduate from high school and only 20 percent go on to college.
To address this, House Bill 1745 proposes a multi-pronged approach, which includes measures to make college more affordable for youth in foster care; establish an outreach program; provide them with resources for academic and financial support; and recommend further ways to help students succeed.
Overall, the legislation is designed to assist foster care children in promoting their independence through educational opportunities and reducing their reliance on government assistance programs.
Remembering Our Heroes
Monday, May 28, is Memorial Day, honoring the men and women who have sacrificed their lives serving in our nation’s military. More than 1.1 million Americans have died in wars in which the United States entered, including nearly 500,000 in the Civil War and 405,000 in World War II.

Fish for Free on Sunday
Anglers fishing in Pennsylvania’s waterways this weekend are encouraged to take advantage of the annual Fish for Free Day on Sunday, May 27. As part of this program from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC), anyone (resident or non-resident) can legally fish on all Pennsylvania waterways without a license. All other fishing regulations will still apply.
To make the fishing experience more convenient on the Fish-for-Free days, people can borrow equipment from dozens of fishing tackle loaner sites across the state. Many of the sites are right at state parks, which are always a popular place for visitors during the Memorial Day weekend. Loaner sites are also available at county parks and some public libraries. This is the first of two dates set by the PFBC to enhance fishing opportunities. The next day is Independence Day, Wednesday, July 4.
Traveling Over Memorial Day? Check Traffic Conditions on 511PA.com
Travelers can log onto 511PA.com to check current traffic impacts from construction, traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 770 traffic cameras. The service is free and available 24 hours a day.
511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website.
Travelers are always reminded to buckle up, put their phones away and stay sober when behind the wheel.
In other PennDOT news, driver license and photo centers will be closed Saturday, May 26, through Monday, May 28, for the holiday. Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services online through PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services website, dmv.pa.gov.

Car Seat Safety Check
My annual car seat safety check is set for Thursday, May 31, from 4-7 p.m., at L.B. Smith Ford Lincoln, 1100 Market St., Lemoyne. Local law enforcement will be on hand to ensure that child safety seats are properly secured in vehicles. Parents and caregivers also will be instructed on the correct installation procedures. • Mechanicsburg Area High School students of Caroline Berry of Upper Allen Township and Charlie Taylor of Upper Allen Township visited the Capitol as part of the guest page program. Guest pages serve on the House floor during session days and witness government up close.
• The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral celebrated its annual Greek Festival in Camp Hill last weekend. The festivities included three days of food, art and music celebrating the Greek Orthodox tradition.
• I had the honor of presenting Silver and Bronze Awards to members of Girl Scout Troops 20506 and 12085, both based in Mechanicsburg, at their end of the year awards dinner. The girls tackled a number of hard issues in our community. Thank you to the adults who work with these future leaders.
